Soul Seasons at Digital Graffiti

Three years ago I heard about a little oasis in Florida called Alys Beach from friend and fellow artist Shantell Martin. Therein lies a very unique festival called Digital Graffiti which she has headlined (quite a few times) with her beautiful live-drawing performances.

Each year’s festival attracts digital artists, filmmakers, musicians, interactive designers, photographers, VJs, producers, celebrities, agency executives and fans of art, technology and architecture.

According to their website:

“Digital Graffiti is the world’s first projection festival featuring artists, using the latest technologies to project their original works onto the town’s iconic white walls.”

With nearly 200 submissions from countries including England, Portugal, France, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Serbia, South Korea, Sweden, Japan, Cambodia, Poland, Ireland, India, Brazil, Spain, Taiwan, Iran, Ukraine and the USA, Alys Beach announced that my animation, Soul Seasons, is one of 23 finalists who will exhibit and compete at the Sixth Annual Digital Graffiti Festival.

Prizes will be awarded in various categories and judged by a panel of art and industry experts. The winning categories include Best of Show, Most Innovative, Most Experimental Submission, Best in Florida-Homegrown, Best Animated Submission and Curator’s Choice. All winners will be announced on the evening of June 8th at Caliza Pool.

I’m really looking forward to be a part of this festival, meeting the other artists and finally getting to check out the Alys Beach community. It’s not often you come across a festival that honors video artists in this way. Hopefully this type of event will inspire more like it to happen in the future.

A Beautiful Spectacle

Hey guys! Coming this Wednesday night is my first VJ performance of the new year! I’ll be performing at the Beautiful Spectacle show, presented by The FC Beat Magazine!

I am performing with The Moon, an audio/visual project created by musician Jeff Schram that incorporates acoustic music, digital manipulation, vocals, and my live visual projections.

I’ve been craving adventure and traveling (as I do nearly everyday of my life!!), and as a result I’ve put together a set that will take you all on a visual journey into magical abstract landscapes, starry nights and secret underwater worlds, all synchronized with Jeff’s musical soundscape.

We will be going on around 7:30pm, but the whole event is from 6-10p and there are dozens of amazing people, performances, visual art, music & drinks to keep you busy throughout!  We are very much looking forward to it and to meeting new folks too.

A Crash Course on the Anatomy of Robots

Hey Everybody!  

I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be VJing two very unique shows this week.

My good friend Kent Evans, who happens to be a super talented author, musician and poet has just launched his second book (and soundtrack for the book) called, “A Crash Course on the Anatomy of Robots”.

This unique performance includes the author reading in addition to live music & visual performances. Kent Evans will play guitar, Laura Wilson will be on violin, Andrew Trudeau will join in with multiple instruments and I will be mixing live visuals.

Please join us for a reading at Bluestockings book store in NY on Tuesday, September 18th, from 7-9pm, and then at White Rabbit for the after party for the music & visuals.

If you’re a Stamford local, you’ll have a chance to check out the performance on Thursday, September 20th, from 5:30-7pm.

Kent Evans’ A Crash Course on the Anatomy of Robots is a gripping action-adventure novel inspired by personal events in the author’s life. Evans’ explains, “The books is sort of a love song to being an artist, travel, the death of my parents, and disastrous relationships.” The main character, Damien Wood, is a young man whose lived his life as a mere robot, hurling himself with abandon from place to place and from one hollow commitment to another. It is only after a series of tragedies that Damien’s full spectrum of emotions start to emerge, which sends him to Asia on a dark odyssey of self-revelation. The book has been widely praised, including Inés Ferrero Cándenas observation, “Crash Course travels on the wings of poetry, autobiography, relationships and humor to cross-examine modern reality and cultural rebellion.” Kent Evans also collaborated with musicians for an original soundtrack accompanying the book, available now on iTunes.

Thanks so much for everyone who came out to see Soul Seasons!! This piece means a lot to me for many reasons and I am very happy to have been able to share it with so many people.

The good news is, if you missed the launch, you can still catch the video. I’m planning on having a closing party for anyone who wants to come out and join me on the last night of it’s installation. A few folks asked me if I would VJ so I have decided to add that into the festivities.

“Danger’s Zone” article in The Beat Magazine

Hey guys! Please be on the look out for The Beat magazine, who have just released their spring issue with a dangerously wonderful article featuring my graphic & performance art. I was first approached by editor and chief Wendy Logan and creative director Andy Liverant when Kodomo and I had performed an audio/visual show together at the Factory Underground last year.

The magazine is dedicated to the food, arts, culture & color of Fairfield County and provides a wide range of articles that profile chefs, restaurants, artists, cultural institutions as well as columns dedicated to wine, dining reviews and music.

I’m very excited to be a featured artist this spring, so please check out the latest issue if you can find it around town, or view it here digitally. Please take the time to “friend” them on Facebook and check out all the great work that they’re doing to bring some flavor into our local area.

Warmer weather and sunny days are upon us and I’m getting excited for participating in more craft fairs and events as the weeks roll on. I was reading Etsy for some inspiration this morning and thought it would be fun to answer some questions that were featured when they were portraying one of their artists. So here is a little self-portrait exercise that I decided to put together on life in and out of the studio. Enjoy!

Debut of The Moon

The Moon

Hi Folks!  I have a new show announcement that I’m excited to tell you about…

On Thursday November 10th, a new collaborative performance project that I’m working on, The Moon, will be debuted locally at Franklin Street Works. FSW is a not-for-profit art space and cafe that recently opened in downtown Stamford, CT.

I’m performing with musician Jeff Schram who will be filling the atmosphere with his original acoustic songs, heightened by electronic elements, vocals & digital manipulation. I will be cooking up a visual cocktail of projections and real time camera effects live, and together we aim to transform the space into a colorful dreamworld of visionary motion, art & sound.

Signal to Noise #3

Hey guys! This Saturday, October 8, from 8PM-2AM, will be the third Signal to Noise event at the Museum of the Moving Image.

I’m super excited to be invited back and Jeff and I will be once again outfitting the place with 6-7 projectors filling their performance space. I’ve been busy in my studio creating new materials, testing new equipment and getting ready for this epic set-up. Hope to see some of you there. We’ll be working with a number of other visualists that evening and will be VJing for MiniBoone.

Signal to Noise once again takes over the entire Museum of the Moving Image with interactive spectacles and visual delights, including electro-jams, post-rave vibes, circuit-bent video, shadow game tournaments, battling guitar video game contests, and much more as the galleries stay open late and the party goes later.
